The Influence Of "Sumeru" Space Model On The Stupa

"Sumeru world" as the core of Buddhist world,is in the four corners of the world as the main direction of a cross symmetric,and the spatial pattern of outward radiation layout in the form of circular culvert."Sumeru world" was described it in detail in the Buddhist scriptures,which is highly centralized,discipline and distinctive.The sumeru spatial pattern plays an important role in the development of Indian Buddhism and even Chinese buddhist architecture.As a unique category of buddhist architecture,the stupa is the most concentrated representation of buddhist teachings.There are many relations between the origin and evolution of the stupa and the spatial pattern of mount sumeru.However,for a long time,the academic research on the "Sumeru world" has mostly stayed at the level of religion and philosophy,the academic research on the stupa is from an aesthetic point of view.So,the connection between the stupa architecture and the sumeru spatial pattern,which is rich in content and far-reaching,has not received sufficient attention.Especially in the research on the factors affecting the evolution of the stylistic level of the stupa,after Buddhism spread to China.The research content of this paper is based on systematic research on ancient books,overseas historical materials,near-contemporary research and field surveys,take the sumeru spatial pattern and the stupa as the research object.Starting from the Buddhist classics,defining the characteristics of the sumeru spatial pattern.Integrating the domestic and international Buddhist cosmology and the related works of Buddhist architecture research,looking for the connection between the sumeru spatial pattern and the stupa architecture,especially for the special correspondence between abstract intention and specific form.Pay attention to the worship and belief in the early period of the stupa,contacting the evolution of the sumeru spatial pattern in the process of buddhist scripture translation,tracing back to the source and examining the significance of cosmological religious culture contained in the architectural design of the stupa,analysis of the translation method of the sumeru spatial pattern in the stupa architecture in all domains,Exploring the development and evolution of stupa architecture under the influence of the sumeru spatial pattern.And based on this,do comprehensive research on stupa through three typical periods after Buddhism was introduced to China.Prove examples from the overall layout of the temple,the stupa single shape and the decorative details,pushing systematic research on the meaning of stupa architectural space to a deeper level.
