Abstract/Summary:
The development of Internet technology has provided opportunity for small businesses to tap into new markets that were previously limited to word of mouth through social media. However, the same digital avenues of communication have left these same organizations vulnerable to a host of cyber attackers that threaten to undermine successful operations. These threats originate from differing sources and have differing motives, but all are fully capable of causing significant damage to the computer systems and data of small businesses.;The purpose of this research was to analyze the cyber threats that challenge small businesses. What types of cyber threats indirectly endanger small businesses? How effectively are small businesses responding to cyber threats, and in what respects can security capabilities be improved? What resources are available to aid small businesses in addressing cyber threats?;This analysis was accomplished through a thorough examination of cyber threats that challenge small businesses, a review of security plans and readiness as reported in surveys by small businesses, and an assessment of inexpensive or free tools which can aid business owners in improving the security of their respective digital footprints.;Keywords: Cybersecurity, Professor Christopher Riddell, Cyber Readiness, Risk Management, Training, Mitigation.
