Abstract/Summary:
Major emerging sources of Broadband Internet access are cable network and fixed wireless. In the cable arena, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification defines the Medium-Access-Protocol mechanisms for Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial cable networks. At the same time, the high air-interface error rate is a major factor that can affect the fixed wireless environment. We consider application performance and other issues when Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification is used as the access technology in a lossy environment.;This work studies the performance of Transmission Control Protocol based application such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol and File Transfer Protocol over a Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification network. The performance of Voice Over Internet Protocol over a Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification network is also studied. The upstream and downstream performance of applications is studied. Through simulation, we observe that the loss factor can noticeably affect the application performance in both directions, and the cycle time can play a major factor in this regard.
