Abstract/Summary:
The growth of the Internet and our needs for learning has produced massive amounts of telelearning resources. However inefficient metadata management has created a critical constraint on our ability to discover, manage and use these resources.; This thesis aims at improving information retrieval and knowledge discovery in telelearning by effective metadata management. The Metadata Management System implemented in this thesis will facilitate the creation, storage and utilization of learning object metadata, and help distant learners to achieve the optimum learning effect.; We adopted some existing metadata specification and added multimedia metadata as a special class. The system was designed and implemented as a database driven three-tier Web application. Metadata was collected through author input or generated by system. XML was used as the data transfer format between different tiers to facilitate information interchange. Once completed, this system architecture will be incorporated into the Multimedia Interactive TeleLearning System (MITS) developed at the Multimedia and Mobile Agent Research Laboratory of the University of Ottawa.
