Abstract/Summary:
This study examined how the University of Alaska through its Sea Grant College Program could respond to the multidisciplinary needs of the Alaska seafood industry. An ethnographic content analysis of documents relating to the creation and implementation of the national Sea Grant College Program was used to write a narrative that explored the evolution of the program in relationship to the purpose of this research.; Recommendations for reorganizing the Alaska Sea Grant Program were based on three conclusions. The Kellogg Commission concept of the engaged university is conducive to the implementation of adult education extension programs. The land-grant university system of Cooperative Extension is a useful model for reorganizing the Alaska Sea Grant College Program. The National Sea Grant College Program has evolved from a program that originally supported the economic exploitation of ocean resources to one that now emphasizes their wise use and conservation.
