Abstract/Summary:
Understanding the degree of process complexity in a manufacturing operation aids managers in deciding how to organize their factories. Developing effective strategies for managing factory operations is an ongoing concern for managers. Tools such as computer integrated manufacturing system (CIMS) can aid and improve effectiveness in manufacturing practices. CIMS is defined as the hierarchical computer integration of the manufacturing enterprise through the application of information technology and computer networking. This is sometimes referred to as the automated linking together of multiple computer technologies for the purpose of manufacturing excellence. This includes such systems as business, planning, schedule, quality control, engineering, material control, raw material, and manufacturing. This paper explains the functions and the applications of the CIMS.
