The main aim of this Thesis is to characterize intermodal transport, mainly that of merchandise, as well as the impact that new information technology has on it.; Land transport and the railway-motorway dialectic shall receive preferential treatment throughout the text due to their significance for the future of the sector.; The current situation of transport shall be analyzed, including its tendencies with a view to the near future, the evolution of each of its modes, as well as the stimulus given to the development and integration of the latter,{09}for the sake of a greater efficiency and respect for the environment.; The field of the European Union (EU) is that which shall be most profusely studied, due to the increasingly more determinant influence of the community transport policies in the heart of its member countries. Within this framework, the Spanish case shall be worthy of special attention.; Andalusia, the province of Cadiz and its two bays shall be the following aspects that we shall move on to, from the terrestrial point of view, up to the completion of a global vision of the main aim of this Thesis.; The Thesis is placed in a society that quickly evolves towards globalization, with important repercussions on all aspects, especially in the fields of the economy, commerce, finance and the environment.; Globalization or internationalization has started to show because of the fast expansion of commerce on a world scale and a massive flow of capital and information, accompanied by an unparalleled liberalization of the economy.; New information technologies are speeding up these changes, with flows and exchanges of data, documents, etc, which immediately take place, in real time, and anywhere on the planet.; Communication by Internet opens up possibilities, limitless in principal, of new relations and new approaches in all fields, in particular those of the economy, commerce and transport.
