With the deepening development of global economic integration,China's economic strength continues to increase. As the main part of the national economy, the economy of northern China has made an important contribution to promoting the national economic development. However, with the acceleration of the reform and opening up process, the economic development of cities in northern China has been uneven, and the economic development gap has gradually widened. To narrow the gap of economic development among cities in northern China is of great significance to the balanced development of the whole northern region and the national economy, and ultimately to the realization of the grand goal of building a well-off society in an all-round way. Therefore, under the guidance of the relevant regional theory, this paper takes 159 cities in northern China as the research object, uses the methods of standard deviation, coefficient of variation and spatial autocorrelation analysis to analyze the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the regional economic development differences between 2005 and 2017,then carries out the influencing factors for the economic differences and put forward some suggestions. In order to contribute to the coordinated economic development of northern China. This paper draws the following conclusions:(1)From the perspective of time evolution, the standard deviation increased from 2005 to 2014,decreased from 2014 to 2015,and increased after 2016,showing a gradual upward trend in general;while the coefficient of variation and Taylor coefficient decreased from 2005 to 2010,and increased from 2010 to 2011.After2012,it declined again, showing a gradual downward trend on the whole. From 2005 to 2017,the absolute difference of regional economic development in northern China is gradually widening and the relative difference is gradually narrowing.(2)From the perspective of spatial differences in economic development, the regions of "high-high agglomeration" type of economic development in northern China after 2005 are mainly concentrated in Tangshan City,Weihai City,Qingdao City,Yantai City and Dongying City, and the regional distribution of "high-low agglomeration" type and "low-high agglomeration" type is stable, and they are distributed in Haixi and Yushu prefectures respectively. The "low-low agglomeration" type of area is spatially distributed, mainly concentrated in some cities in GansuProvince. From the point of view of the hot areas of economic development, after 2005,the hot areas of economic development have concentrated in some cities along the eastern coast of northern China, such as Weihai,Yantai,Qingdao and Dongying. In 2017,the hot areas of economic development have increased Beijing and Tianjin. Most cities in northern China are in sub-economic hot spots. In 2017,Hetian,Kashgar,Hegang and Qitaihe were transformed from sub-economic hot spots to sub-economic cold spots. The economic cold spots were mainly distributed in some cities in the western region, such as Huangnan,Gannan,Longnan,Dingxi and Linxia. From the perspective of spatial differences in the level of comprehensive economic development, most cities in the East and west of northern China are still in backward areas after 2005.Beijing and Tianjin are economically developed regions.Shenyang,Dalian,Harbin,Changchun,Shijiazhuang,Zhengzhou,Jinan,Baotou,Ordos,Dalian,Tangshan,Weihai,Qingdao and Xi'an are more developed regions. Most cities in the western region have been in backward areas.(3)Economic development differences are often the result of many factors. This paper analyses the differences of regional economic development in northern China from five factors: natural environment, historical development basis, industrial structure differences, transportation conditions and talent technology.
