At present,we are in an era of interconnection of all things,an era when information is more accessible and yet people are increasingly anxious in face of a sea of information. The publishing industry plays an important role in knowledge production and cultural inheritance. The human civilization sustains through the regulated and innovative production of information in publishing companies.Owing to the advances in technology and the change of media, however, people no longer rely on paper publications for information.Paying for knowledge is becoming popular as a new way to acquire knowledge and skills. It indicates the change of recipients'preferences as well as the divergence of media.Paid knowledge platforms, which also have the responsibilities of knowledge production and cultural inheritance, provide lessons for publishers undergoing media convergence.Inextricably linked to the Internet, the knowledge-based products revolutionize the publishing process and generate huge profits by winning the hearts of customers.A new pathway of transformation and upgrading is ahead of publishers.Media convergence is a big topic that can be discussed at the macro, meso,or micro levels. As the focus of the paper, the micro-level media convergence is directly related to the daily work of publishing companies and practitioners. In this respect, the author delves into the publishing process for research on the main actors of media convergence and other issues. The first part of the paper is literature review, followed by a summary of the current studies and the shortcom:ings as well as this paper's research structure and innovations.Integrating media convergence and the background of paid knowledge sharing, the author defines the concepts of paid knowledge sharing and the publishing process and analyzes the significance of the publishing process to publishing and media convergence.Dedao app and Zhongdu app, both well-reputed,are selected as the subjects of the empirical research for they are good examples of the knowledge-based products developed by online platforms and those developed by traditional publishers respectively.Research methods include comparative analysis and interviews. This paper compares the traditional publishing process of topic planning, drafting, reviewing, editing, designing, proofreading, printing and distribution with the process of a paid knowledge platform. The three steps of content production, promotion, and operation and maintenance are what they have in common and where the comparison focuses on.It is found that similarities exist between the two processes. The former inherits some features of the latter, while the latter is learning from the former.Nevertheless, the two processes have differences in the philosophy, organization, and other factors. They can learn from and integrate with each other. The paper argues that the emerging of one medium is not necessarily at the xpense of another;instead, the old medium should adapt itself to the new trends. Thus, the convergence is possible and should be evolutionary. As for the actors and pathways of the convergence, the traditional publishing industry should play a major role, make use of its high-quality content, adjust itself to the Internet, and learn from the emerging knowledge-based services. To mitigate the conflicts of different philosophies and cultures, the paper proposes solutions such as integration and internal adjustment and a process model of media convergence in publishing and analyzes the challenges and opportunities.Hopefully, the paper can provide some lessons to learn on the theories and practices on the micro level of media convergence in the publishing industry.
