Criticism Of McLuhan's Thoughts On Media Technology

Today,in the era of electronic media characterized by three-dimensional network,digital reproduction and zero-distance transmission,the communication model deeply shapes people's emotions,illusions,values and ways of understanding themselves and the world.Under this huge modern technological medium,human subjectivity has been lost and it has become a slave to technology.According to Western communication scholar Marshall McLuhan,this kind of violation is always under the circumstance of technical modification in the normal use of technology.It is also Marx's view that this kind of human crisis is actually capitalism.The embodiment of production methods in media technology.To study the influence of contemporary media technology on human beings,it is inevitable that Marx cannot be avoided,and that the famous communication scientist Marshall McLuhan of the 20 th century cannot be avoided.Although McLuhan once claimed that Marxism could not deal with the problems of the 20 th century at all,he did not study the century-old problem-technical issues.However,we have found through research that McLuhan sees that modern people are controlled by technology through the great achievements of modern technology.This is in contrast to Marx's historical background of capitalist society,dialectically analyzing the dual effects of science and technology on civilization and seeing technical constraints.The human problem is similar.Therefore,we need to strengthen the study of McLuhan's media technology thinking,and also show that there is actually no "go to Marxism" in Western communication theory,but it is only influenced by the "Cold War social science".This article aims to correctly understand the relationship between contemporary new media technology and society by comprehensively reviewing McLuhan's media technology thoughts and criticizing his ideas based on Marxist theory and position.Taking McLuhan's media technology thought as the starting point,this paper explores the practical basis and theoretical origin of McLuhan's media technology thought.Based on the investigation of McLuhan's media technology concept,this paper discusses the main content of McLuhan's media technology thought.On this basis,the author analyzes the academic circles' comments on McLuhan's media technology thinking.Historically,McLuhan has always been mixed,praisers call it "the prophet of the electronic age",positivist school and empirical school criticize its theory as "technical determinism",through the "technical utopia" of McLuhan The critique of ideological,ideological,and technological opposition to analyze social and cultural ideas,so that we can re-examine contemporary McLuhan's media technology thoughts,has important implications for the construction of Marxist media technology theory and practice in contemporary China.
