Position And Discourse: A Comparative Analysis Of International News From "Xinhua Daily" And "Central Daily News" During The War Of Resistance Against Japan

The Xinhua Daily and the Central Daily News are important newspapers of the Communist Party and the Kuomintang during the Anti-Japanese War.They were published in Chongqing in September 1938.From 1938 to 1945,it was the key seven years of the Anti-Japanese War.The Kuomintang and the Communist Party first united.And at the end of 1938,the Chinese army and people finally entered a stage of strategic stalemate.With the expansion of the war,Japan gradually changed its strategy of aggression against China,investing its main force in the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army against the enemy's back battlefield,and using the political inducement against the Kuomintang authorities.Some people in the Kuomintang government hope that China and Japan will reconcile.At the same time,Japan's attitude of "common anti-communism" and"economic support" has also attracted the attention of European and American countries.Starting from their respective interests,they hope to extend the Japanese war to the Soviet Union.Therefore,European and American countries began to dispatch to the Kuomintang government.The lobbying team hopes that the Chiang Kai-shek government will reach an armistice agreement with Japan.After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941,the Anti-Japanese War officially became part of the Second World War.Under such an international situation,both Xinhua Daily and the Central Daily News have intensified international news reporting,analyzing,researching and judging the international situation,and trying to let the international society understand the war in China.However,as an important newspaper of different parties,what are the characteristics of Xinhua Daily and Central Daily News in international news reports?Do the two newspapers have differences in standpoint and speech strategies?This study uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods to sample the international news reports of Xinhua Daily and Central Daily News from September 1938 to August 1945.And this study uses Fairclough's discourse analysis method to Analyze news content.Taking the important historical events such as the signing of the Soviet-German's non-aggression treaty,the Soviet-Japanese neutral treaty,and the US Vice President Wallace's visit to China as examples,this article reports on the similarities and differences of the Communist Party and the Kuomintang newspapers in international news from three aspects:text research,discourse practice and social practice.The study found that:First,facing national peril and national interests,Xinhua Daily and Central Daily News can abandon their prejudice and be unanimously.The focus of the two newspaper reports is on the United Kingdom,the United States and the Soviet Union,and they strive for international assistance and support.In addition,the two newspapers reported on the international battlefields with positive reports,and tried to expose the fascist evils and played a guiding role in the establishment of the anti-war united front.Second,in terms of specific reporting areas and reporting topics,there are major differences between Xinhua Daily and Central Daily News,reflecting different political ideas,foreign policies,and war lines.Third,in the choice of language strategy,Xinhua Daily and Central Daily News present a large discourse difference,and the ideology is quite different.The news report of Xinhua Daily reflects Foucault's "concentricity"-put yourself in the same position as the readers to present and express opinions.The Xinhua Daily is good at using infectious words to enhance your views and use a combination of narrative and description to weaken the persuasion,so it gets more support.The Central Daily News uses less vocabulary with obvious emotions.It is also good at explaining opinions by explaining.Even when they are striving for America's assistance,there is a sense of authority that is unquestionable.On the whole,in the face of national survival,although the two newspapers have similarities in international reports.The Xinhua Daily wants to shape a political party image that adheres to democratic politics,adheres to a comprehensive war of resistance,and persists in building a united front against the war.The Central Daily News wants to create an image that has the authority of the Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-shek,achieves one-party dictatorship,gains a higher international status,and wins international support.In short,Xinhua Daily and Central Daily News fully reflect the different political positions and ideologies of the KMT and the CPC in international news reports.
