Objective:To observe and evaluate the effect of acupuncture on the infertile female with polycystic ovary syndrome, which may provide a basis for clinical treatment options. Methods:According to the inclusion criteria,86 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility were enrolled in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of Shuguang Hospital affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. They were randomly divided into the true acupuncture group and the sham acupuncture group, with 43 cases in each group. The same acupoints were selected in the two groups, the true acupuncture group was treated with real acupuncture, and the sham acupuncture group was treated with sham acupuncture. Both groups were treated combined with herbal medicine twice a week, and three menstrual cycles were one course of treatment. The pregnancy rate, ovulation rate,PCOS score,TCM symptom score, sex hormone level and insulin resistance index were compared before and after treatment.Results:1)The pregnancy rate of the true acupuncture group during the whole experiment was31%,which was significantly better than the sham acupuncture group?16%??P=0.015?.The pregnancy rate in the true acupuncture group?24%?was higher than that in the sham acupuncture group?13%?during the treatment, but the difference was not statistically significant?P=0.203?.The pregnancy rate in the true acupuncture group during the follow-up period was 35%,which was significantly better than the sham acupuncture group?9%??P=0.035?.2)The ovulation rate of the true acupuncture group?56%?was better than the sham acupuncture group?46%??P=0.046?.3)The recovery effect of the true acupuncture group was 56.1%,which was significantly higher than the sham acupuncture group?18.4%??P=0.01?.4)The PCOS scores of both groups were significantly improved?true acupuncture group P=0.000004,sham acupuncture group P=0.000016?,and the true acupuncture group was better than the sham acupuncture group?P=0.038?.5)The TCM symptom scores of the two groups were significantly improved?true acupuncture group P=0.000002,sham acupuncture group P=0.000001?,and there was no significant difference between the two groups?P=0.735?.6)In terms of sex hormone levels, the levels of estradiol?E2?,progesterone?P?,testosterone?T?,luteinizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone?LH/FSH?in the true acupuncture group were significantly improved?P values are 0.025?0.032?0.000002?0.04?,and just the P level in the sham acupuncture group was improved?P=0.024?,but there was no significant difference between the comparisons of two groups?P=0.225?.7)The insulin resistance index of the true acupuncture group improved after treatment, but it was not obvious?P=0.105?,and the insulin resistance index of the sham acupuncture group did have significant change?P=0.934?,There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups?P=0.225?.Conclusion:Acupuncture therapy can improve the pregnancy rate of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility, increase the ovulation rate of patients, improve the physical signs of polycystic ovary syndrome, reduce androgen and luteinizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone level, but still need large-scale clinical trials to further clarify the efficacy and mechanism of the therapy.
