In the first half of the 19 th century,the early protestant missionaries who came to China began to set up newspapers in China to introduce the natural scenery,human architecture,classical writings and social customs of Chinese society.The West China Missionary News,as a protestant Christian in China founded The first English journals in southwest and the longest journal in the history of Sichuan of modern periodical,relatively intact The western missionaries in China during 1899-1943 southwest of social culture and local conditions and customs of observation,become an important medium southwest of westerners understand local conditions and customs.Through the content of folk culture published in newspapers and magazines,the picture of folk culture in southwest China in the late Qing dynasty and early Republic of China can be seen to some extent.In this paper,narratology related research methods and research limits are brought into the field of argumentation,the theoretical system and analysis framework of the article are constructed,and the folklore reports in The West China Missionary News are taken as the historical basis of the research.Through the interpretation,induction and summary of the narrator,narrative content,narrative discourse and narrative strategy of the newspaper,the author aims to study what kind of Southwest folklore the newspaper presents In order to achieve the goal of narration,it is necessary to change the picture and how to narrate folk customs in the unique regional and cultural environment.It is found that most of the narrators in the folklore report of The West China Missionary News have multiple identities.They are not only southwest social tourists who have done a lot of fieldwork,but also sinologists who are interested in folklore culture and have done a lot of research.In addition to the reports published in the report,they have made a lot of research results,such as papers.Different narrative identities lead to a variety of narrative perspectives,mainly limited perspective andcomprehensive use of the first person and the third person perspective.In terms of narrative discourse,missionaries use the narrative structure of news reports and literary works in their reports,which combines horizontal and linear narrative structure;make full use of metaphor and comparative rhetoric,improve the Western readers' understanding of Chinese folk culture by constructing folk images and grasping typical ways;on the micro discourse level,missionaries use a variety of translation techniques to translate and introduce local culture-loaded words with Chinese characteristics to convey the meaning of culturally loaded words accurately.In the sentence arrangement,they use question sentences and compound sentences to attract the readers' interest and show the cultural characteristics from the details.In the choice of narrative strategy,the writers use the multiple narrative symbols of "words&pictures" to expand the meaning space of folk narrative;the foothold of narrative is to choose "civilian narrative" to present the folk characteristics from the perspective of small characters;for some feudal and ignorant folk customs,"Critical Narrative" should be properly carried out in the narrative process to conform to the values of Western readers and penetrate into the Western ideology and thinking build cultural identity between Chinese and Western readers.
