During the Second World War,China,as an important part of the Pacific battlefield, attracted a large number of foreign j ournalists to cross the ocean to China, among which there was a special group,Jewish journalist.Among them were early Jewish immigrants from Russia, such as Israel Epstein,Anna Ginsbourg, etc.;there were also American intellectuals who longing to explore the Far East, such as Theodore Harold White,Nathaniel Peffer, etc.,refugees driven by Nazism fled from Europe to Shanghai, such as Willy Donn,Adolf Joseph Storfer, etc.Because of the turbulent situation in China and no history of anti-Semitism,they were able to carry out news activities on the vast land of China, covering the wars, political situation, society, culture, and other aspects.Considering the different purposes and identities of Jewish journalists, this paper outlines the activities of the Jewish journalists during the Second World War from three aspects:main areas of their activities in China, the content of j ournalistic activities, the publications and institutions they served, also analyzes the personal political tendencies reflected in the activities of Jewish journalists. And through a retrospective analysis of the life experience of Jewish journalists before coming to China, this paper figures out the common characteristics of this group. They all grew up in secular Jewish families and have received Western-style higher education;they have all experienced exclusion or immigration, resulting in a lack of sense of belonging, also feelings as "the outsider"and "the other";they were all deeply sympathetic to the Chinese people, who shared the identity as "oppressed people" with Jewish people. From a group perspective, the activities of Jewish journalists in China to some extent corrected the biased cognitive perspective of the West at that time, the report on the Anti-Japanese War also helped the outside world to understand the situation on the Chinese battlefield and helped China receive international assistance and support.Even today, the materials and reports left by Jewish journalists are not only of great practical significance for opposing fascism and racism as well as deepening the understanding of modern Sino-Jewish relations, but also provide historical references and inspirations to journalists who dedicate to cross-cultural communication and international communication.
