At present,people are in an era where the visual culture is extremely prosperous.Since the moment people get up in the early morning,they are surrounded by various images,so some scholars say that today's society has entered the era of images.Along with the image era,there are changes in the thinking and research methods of historical research.The main point of the "image turn" is to realize that images serve as historical materials to exert the value of literature evidence,to expand the horizons and research scope of history.The Thirteen Hongs of Canton not only has an important position in Chinese history but also in the history of world trade and cultural exchanges.Image data of the Thirteen Hongs of Canton is a significant historical material for research.This research collates three types of image books of the Thirteen Hongs of Canton-original picture books,edited picture books,and exhibition albums,and summarizes four types of pictures of this period-the painter's paintings,accompanying records,exported paintings,and utensils.Comprehensively considering the significance of the picture book,the content of the portrait,the historical materials of the text,and other factors,this research selects two albums: "Impressions of the Qing Dynasty Painted by British Mission","Impressions of 19 th Century Chinese Cities" for research.The content analysis method,the image analysis method,the history analysis method,as well as the image analysis,the new cultural history view,the orientalism theory frame carries on the interpretation.The results reveal that landscape painting shows the beautiful natural and humanistic scenery of China,which reflects the characteristics of Westerners' regional cognition of Chinese scenery and special attention to port cities.From the attitude point of view,Westerners think that Chinese scenery exudes charming charm.Portraits show the social members of all classes in China,reflecting obvious hierarchical differences,special smoking hobbies,and other characteristics.From the attitude point of view,Chinese characters in the eyes of Westerners expose many shortcomings.The custom painting shows a variety of Chinese culture,showing "innovation" and "backward" co-exist labor culture;the gap between the rich and poor,gambling prostitution leisure culture;cultural tolerance,Confucian orthodoxy,multi-religious coexistence,strict hierarchy,feudal superstition of the custom culture;moderate magnanimity,male superiority,barbarian disposition,imperial power supreme punishment culture,from the attitude,the conflict between Chinese and Western ideas is obvious.Based on image interpretation,further,explore the deep meaning of the image,gain insight into the deconstruction of Chinese image in the context of cross-cultural communication.This research summarizes the characteristics of the image text from the aspects of text breadth and text depth,analyzes the reasons for the change of attitude and the reversal of Chinese image from the western perspective by using the new cultural-historical view,and uses Orientalism to analyze the essence of Chinese image in the cross-cultural context.Generally speaking,the image of China in the period of the Thirteen Hongs of Canton is not only a record and reflection of Chinese reality to a certain extent,but also a manifestation of the differences between Chinese and Western intercultural communication concepts,and also a reflection of the cultural form of the West itself.
