China's non-fiction writing originated in the literary world, and has soon swept journalism. As technological empowerment continues to develop and both the age and society yearn for authenticity, recent years has witnessed the emergence of a multitude of new media platforms advocating the popularization of non-fiction writing, such as the "Real Story Project" platform, thus non-fiction writing has entered a "mass writing era" that encourages "user-generated content"(UGC).While non-fiction mass writing enriches the forms and contents of the media memory, the emergence of articles that disseminate falsified information in the name of "non-fiction writing",for example,“The Death of a Number One Examinee from a Humble Family",manifests that some problems are silently threatening the bottom line of non-fiction writing and should be solved immediately.Basing itself on the relevant theory of media memory, this thesis performs content and textual analyses on 100 pieces of writings published on the "Real Story Project"platform, and explores the characteristics of these non-fiction writers, the content inclination of these writings, and their authenticity,in order to gain an insight into the future development of non-fiction writing as it tries to strike a balance between its marketization and its responsibility of media memory. The thesis consists of three chapters.Chapter One,also the introductory part, gives detailed descriptions of the origin, the research subject, the research question, and the methodology of this thesis, and conducts a literature review of related studies on non-fiction writing and media memory.Chapter Two makes an in-depth analysis of the content of the "Real Story Project" non-fiction writings.Specifically, the thesis examines the characteristics of these non-fiction writers, who have already become new builders of the media memory, from their perspective as subjects of non-fiction writing. Then, discussions about the written form of non-fiction writings are made from the perspective news genre, and make a thorough analysis on the content inclination from the kinds of memory. Finally, explorations of the authenticity of these works are conducted in light of the principle of news authenticity. As the research demonstrates,non-fiction writing has already been fallen out of balance between its literariness and its authenticity, and the relevant platforms have failed to undertake their responsibility of media memory. The last chapter, based on the findings of the above research, discusses the normative issue of non-fiction mass writing, analyzes the predicaments of non-fiction writing platforms, and proposes some suggestions concerning the future participation of non-fiction writing in building the media memory.By applying the media memory theory to its exploration of the current development of the "Real Story Project" platform, the thesis aims to study whether non-fiction writing has successfully assumed its responsibility of media memory during marketization, find out the failings of non-fiction writing in ethics and writing norms, and then to provide some references for the normative development of non-fiction writing.
