Production Of English-Language Chinese State Media For Overseas Audiences,from The Perspective Of "Gatekeeping"

"Chinese stories,Chinese perspective,international expression"-China's English-language state media provide a window that opens China to the world,shouldering the major responsibility of letting the world understand China and improving China's national image.China Radio International's(CRI)English livestreaming program "China Plus America" is part of this effort to spread the Chinese message to the world.This study takes the host as the research object and studies their topic selection,as well as analyzes content production,presentation methods,safety concerns and hosts of the program.From the perspective of media as a gatekeeper,this paper makes a valuable exploration of Chinese English media's overseas programs,hoping to provide reference and practical lessons for optimizing communication.The research method of this paper aims to draw conclusions through interviews.The interviewees are the hosts and producers of China Plus America.They are the core creators and gatekeepers of the program.Their works run through the whole program and they understand the whole production process.Their first requirement is to find topics that are consistent with the construction of the national image;the second is to find topics with high importance;the third is to find topics that are close to American audiences;and the fourth is to entertain.The second research question regards content planning for livestreaming.It can be divided into three categories:first,content planning in line with media policy;second,mid-term-planning with participation from multiple gatekeepers;third,the presentation mode of livestreaming.This final stage is mainly divided into two categories:the first is influenced by market standards;and the second implements specific publicity objectives.The fourth research question is about livestreaming safety,including the correct political direction,followed by content security,technical safety,and emergency response.The fifth research question is about the presenter,and is divided into four categories:the first is the host's speech under the influence of the gatekeeper,the second is the content of the host's speech,the third is how the social media platform affects the host's content expression,and the fourth is how the audience affects the host's expression and content.This study has found that the livestreaming of "China Plus America" by China's English-language state media is a test of gatekeeper theory.Its gatekeeping practice is deep and wide covering almost every communication section.However,the live broadcast of new media cannot control real-time negative comments from the audience.This is a big challenge for gatekeepers.It proves that in terms of overseas livestreaming,the role of gatekeeper is weakening due to real-time comments from fans.The innovation of this study is that it examines the process of CRI English,one of China' s national foreign media outlets,and can be used as a reference starting point in the future,as no such relevant research has been conducted previously.Secondly,this study is a comprehensive study combining "gatekeeper," "external communication" and"livestreaming" issues,and also helps to make up for a previous lack of relevant comprehensive research."China Plus America" has been around for only one year,and it's hoped the program can provide much needed reference for the optimization of English media broadcast from China.
