Analysis On Modern Library Ethic Construction

The world is now in a new era where information technology is highly advanced and plays a rather crucial role in education.As the central storage of informational resources,college libraries function as the core to college level education,academic research,and ordinary readings.In the era of big data,college libraries in China also face the imminent transformation.Such evolution is especially challenging to the librarians who have been mostly trained to manage the conventional libraries.Both their theory of library science and their understanding of service quality are inadequate to meet the demand by such transition,exacerbating the conflict between the librarians and the visitors as well as impeding these libraries to continue playing their supposed role.The ethnic construction of college libraries is therefore not only an topic worthy of academic attention of the field,but also an emergent and essential issue in the development of college and universities.This essay consists the following five parts:1.Categorization and the ethic definition of libraries: libraries are of three major categories—collegial,public,and specialized—and further differ according to their assigned duties.Public libraries open to the entire society to meet the demand of the general public.Specialized libraries open only to certain specialized groups to meet only such specialized demand.College libraries,on the other hand,open to a population as small as one institution but as large as the entire student body and faculty to meet the demand of human resource development,scientific research,cultural heritage,and social service.The ethnic of such libraries are thus uniquely required by the qualities of their institutions while ensuring the totality of the served group,diversity of referential sources,and quality of service methods.2.Value orientation of modern libraries: in the new era,the value orientation of college libraries must be based on fairness and equality to protect and promote the rights of the visitors and their freedom of research.Therefore,college libraries must follow the neo-socialistinstructions on the cultural constructions of college libraries and with the ethnic aim of directiveness,service,and benevolence.3.Ethic construction and controversies: base on the current state of the college library construction,the issue is of two major aspects: the imbalance between resources of libraries and demand of readers and the conflict between the obligation of the libraries and the rights of the readers.The major cause is the incomplete of systematic ethnic standards and the lack of regulations and professionalism.4.Four Basis: the ethnic construction of modern college libraries must essentially ensure the rights of the visitors and further fulfill four requirements: humanity,equality,academic liberty,and intellectual compatibility.5.Implications and implements: the ethnic constructions are realized through three major channels: the unification of the rights of visitors and the obligation of libraries;the specification of the obligation of libraries—freedom of selection,optimization of resources,protection of privacy,and diversity of service;and the retrain of college librarians in respect to ethnicity and professionalism and by setting up regulation and supervision system.
