The Study Of China Image In Data Journalism Of China And The Western Countries

The development of open data campaign,big data and algorithmic technology has announced the entry of humanity into the data age.As a response of the journalism industry in the data age,data journalism is a kind of news concept and practice that is highly concerned by the academic community and the industry.Compared with traditional journalism,data journalism originated from precision journalism and computer-assisted reporting is considered to be a more objective and credible form of news reporting.It has an advantage naturally of depiction of the synchronic group image and the diachronic overall rule.The advantage of this,to some extent,eliminates the cognitive bias of people in the pseudo-environment.Data journalism is also a kind of news argument centered on data processing,in which data has cross-cultural attributes.In such a news discourse with the above characteristics,it is of special value and significance to examine how Chinese national image is constructed in data journalism.This study uses content analysis and social network analysis,based on four data news columns in China and the West(Shuzishuo of Caixin,Meishuke of the Paper,DataBlog of the Guardian and The Upshot of the New York Times)China's data news reports explore the following questions: 1)What kind of Chinese image does the Chinese and Western data news present? 2)How do Chinese and Western data news reports shape China's image? 3)How to construct a national image communication strategy for data news related to China?The study found that: 1)Domestic data news presents a Chinese political image with an internal political order,peaceful rise and international accountability,but external politics faces many challenges.In contrast,Western data journalism shaped a Chinese political image of internal political backwardness,strong and important but accompanied by threats.2)Domestic data news shows that China's economy is developing rapidly and its volume is huge,but there are also phenomena such as uneven regional development and slowing growth.Western data news reports have also shaped a fast-growing economy and a large-scale economic image of China,but at the same time it has also built an economic image with serious state intervention and low market freedom.3)Domestic data journalism is characterized by the combination of progress and insufficiency in the construction of Chinese social image,while Western data journalism has shaped a Chinese social image with a cluster of problems and a crisis.According to the above findings and in order to enhance the image of China in data news reports,this study suggests that 1)establishing professional norms for data news reports,enriching the form of data news reports,and enhancing attractiveness;2)reporting strategies to moderately strengthen data news related Positive publicity reported in China;3)Enhance the discourse potential of data journalism on international issues.
