With the rapid development of digital technology and the internet,social demands for data and computing have increased dramatically.Digital development has become an inevitable trend,which affects the academic community and deepened into the daily knowledge accumulation of scholars.As a product of the collision between the development of digital technology and traditional humanities,"Digital Humanities" have been widely concerned by the academic community since their inception.The introduction of digital technology and new methods have brought new development opportunities for traditional humanities research.The digital humanities era put forward more precise requirements for the role positioning of university libraries,providing new ideas for the transformation of university libraries under the new environment.Faced with the background of social reality,it is of great research value to explore the role of university libraries in the digital humanities environment.Firstly,this paper reviews the research hotspots and main contents of digital humanities at home and abroad.Based on the case study of six Digital Humanities centers in the United States and other countries,summarizing the four typical roles of university libraries in the digital humanities environment — resource providers,platform builders,project researchers,result promoters.In order to further organize existing roles and explore new roles,this research takes humanities scholars as the research object,conducts a questionnaire survey on 203 humanities scholars in different disciplines,divides its digital competence categories and points out the problems existing in the digital competence development of Chinese humanities scholars;Based on the semi-structured interviews with 22 humanities scholars,the digital needs of humanities scholars and their role requirements for university libraries are truly understood.Referring to the Grounded Theory and importing the obtained data into software Nvivo for coding analysis,three major role dimensions of university libraries in the digital humanities environment are concluded:guidance dimension,service dimension and support dimension.Each dimension corresponds to different roles and totally the university libraries are divided into 14 roles: Digital project planners,digital tools developers,digital competence evaluators,academic frontiers trackers,resource provider,data managers,researchers,project promoters,platform builder,emotionalliaison,teaching trainers,network platform maintainer,technical support,and space providers.Finally,build a framework diagram for the role definition of university library in digital humanities environment and summarize three new roles realization path: Digital tool developers,digital competence evaluators,and emotional liaisons.It provides a theoretical reference for university libraries in China that intend to carry out digital humanities research.
