Research On The Construction Of Female Roles In Women Times In The Late Qing Dynasty And Early Republic

The Women Times is the longest published female publication in late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China(before and after the 1911 Revolution).It is also the first commercial women's publication in China.Its appearance leads to a large number of similar competitors,including the longest published and most influential women's magazine in the history of Chinese women's newspapers and periodicals.It can be said that the founding of the Women Times,for the future business of women's publications can be referenced.Therefore,such a publication with a pioneering significance,has become the research object of this article.Since the 1960 s,with the emergence of the western feminist movement in the field of "media and gender",this paper provides research ideas.The author believes that since the emergence of modern newspapers and periodicals,the media,as an important way of cultural communication,has begun to reflect and influence the society.Therefore,the discussion on the relationship between the media and women can also travel forward in the timeline to get a glimpse of the history.Therefore,this paper discusses the relationship between media and women in historical texts by means of literature research and text analysis.This paper mainly uses the text analysis method to summarize and analyze the female roles presented and constructed by the Women Times.First of all,the author analyzes the founding background of the Women Times from four aspects: politics,economy,culture and society.It is found that the birth and survival of the magazine is extremely unstable in the political system,national capitalism is just budding,and the atmosphere of "women's studies" is becoming more and more intense.In the historical context of the gradual awakening of the female consciousness,this paper probes into the characteristics of the agenda setting of the magazine through the aim of running the magazine and the setting of the columns.The study finds that the women's roles presented and constructed by the Women Times are diverse,including "New wife and good Mother","Mother of the Nation" and "Women National".Each kind of female role has its characteristics and significance in society and magazines.Compared with the traditional female family role,the new wife and mother have the characteristics of new and old co-existence.The significance of scientific housekeeping elaborated by the magazine is to cultivate and shape a new wife and a good mother who are in line with the standards of the times and society,centered on the dissemination of domestic knowledge.At the same time,the articles published in the magazine discuss the role and significance of women in family education,break through the boundary between "mother of the family" and "mother of the nation",construct the female role of "mother of the nation",and realize the reconstruction of "mother of the healthy nation" from the physical dimension.The author finds that the magazine pays more attention to the duty and responsibility of presenting and constructing the "mother of the nation",but neglects the connotation of "national".On the other hand,due to the spread of gender equality and feminist consciousness,as well as the maturity of women's political participation during the revolution of 1911,the social role expectations and self-expectations of "women nationals" were born.The women's political participation movement based on the cognition of women's role in the modern society is more an attempt and effort of role playing.The magazine paid attention to and discussed the rights of "women citizens" from two aspects: "women's education" and "women's political power".The author finds that the role of "women nationals" presented and constructed by magazines shows the rationality of theoretical existence and the illusory nature of practical existence.The attributes of the commercial publications and the complex social relations between women and the early Republic of China make the women's roles in the Women Times pluralistic.And the era background of saving the dead makes the national discourse run through the female role of magazine construction all the time.Of course,the Women Times,which was born and survived in the patriarchal society at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,inevitably displayed a fairly "patriarchal characteristic" in its construction of the female role.
