As a unique optical phenomenon,resonant optical tunneling effect(ROTE)provides a new idea and method for the design of optical devices because of its novel structure and excellent performance,which greatly promotes the development of micro/nano optics.In the paper,the research statuses of classical optical resonator and resonant optical tunneling effect are summarized.The model analysis of resonant optical tunneling effect is expounded from the views of classical optics and quantum mechanics.The regulation mechanism of performance in sensing applications is studied in detail.And the double-ROTE structure is designed and applied to the realization of CRIT effect.Firstly,the transmission spectrum and electric field distribution of the resonant optical tunneling structure are calculated by using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method,and which verifies the strong localization of the light field.Based on the plane wave expansion method,the energy band structure of the ROTE is solved by analogizing 1D photonic crystals,and which reveals that the peak of the ROTE originates from the eigenmodes of the binary multilayer system.And the quantum tunneling model of resonant optical tunneling structure is established,the photon tunneling probability is deduced in detail based on Schr?dinger equation,and an implicit analytical expression of resonant peak is obtained.Which proves that the energy states supported in the resonant optical tunneling structure are split and only those photons with appropriate energy can pass through.Then,the resonant optical tunneling effect sensing model is established,and its performance is characterized and optimized.The relationship between quality factor and sensitivity with structure parameters is studied by transfer matrix method.And Figure of Merit is introduced to evaluate the performance of the sensor by comprehensively taking quality factor and sensitivity into account,which provides a theoretical foundation for the application of ROTE sensing.Finally,the similarities between ring resonantor and ROTE resonator are summarized,and by analogizing the series double rings structure,the double ROTE is designed to realize the CRIT effect.And the influences of the structure parameters on the induced transparent peak are discussed by transfer matrix method.And the structure designed has the characteristics of simple process and low cost,and shows a potential application prospect.
