As the cultural gene of a nation and a country,language is the foundation of the survival and continuation of culture.Since 2013,with the popularity of "Chinese Characters Heroes","Chinese Characters Dictation Conference","Chinese Poetry Competition" and other highly influential competitions of language and culture shows,Chinese language and culture has been exposed on the television stage with a strong momentum,making a great story in the history of contemporary Chinese television.This study is based on the core proposition of "Through what communication mechanism can the cultural value of language and culture competition programmes be realized",and makes an in-depth analysis on it with the theories of semiotics,cultural studies and media rituals.This paper is divided into four parts.In the first part,it defines and classifies the language and culture competition programmes.In the second part,by interpreting complex concepts and relationships between "Symbolic representation","meaning" and "culture",it reveals that in a certain community,all symbolic activities are meaningful activities and community culture is on the premise of the practice and sharing of "meaning".And It is concluded that it has a sufficient theoretical basis that language is the main content of the "Culture Performance" in language and culture competition programmes.The third part discusses that,with its powerful media ritual,how language and culture competition programmes can aggregate the audience through its powerful function of media ritual and make the active participation of the audience constitute the "meaning" of the programs.In the fourth part,the research holds that,the success of language and culture competition programmes owes much to its discard of partial division between the so-called "elite culture" and "popular culture";in addition,the credit should also be given to some strategies of situation reconstruction,such as the gamification of program form dimension,the visualization of scene dimension and the emotionalization of audience emotion.In this way,it facilitates the television coding of traditional culture and the decoding of audience.As a result,it ultimately achieves the communication effect from narrow broadcast to wide broadcast of language and culture competition programmes.
