The Study On The Coverage Of 2016 US Presidential Election From The Perspective Of Foreign News Domestication

In the background of globalization,the importance of foreign news coverage is increasing.News domestication is an application of localized strategies to the production of foreign news,which means that journalists adopt specialized ways of domestication to narrate those news stories more related to their own countries or regions.To some extent,this dispels the trend of homogenization of international news in the background of global communication,which helps foreign news better adapt to the local history,culture,politics and other aspects of society.From the perspective of foreign news domestication,this paper uses the content analysis method to study the coverage of 2016 US Presidential Election by People's Daily and Huanqiu Website Wechat Official Accounts,thus outlining the current performance of the mainstream media in the terms of foreign news domestication.By analyzing the US Presidential Election news reports' sources,topics,reading quantities,domestication levels,domestication ways and the bias of the news reports,this paper summarized the domestication strategies adopted by the People's Daily and Huanqiu Website Wechat Official Accounts and analyzed the effect of news domestication in the context of the new media.It can be seen from the study that both People's Daily and Huanqiu Website Wechat Official Accounts used the two major strategies to domesticate the coverage of 2016 US Presidential Election.They are reporting foreign news from the perspective of ordinary people and setting the China's agenda.In addition,People's Daily also placed remote events in a grand historical context so that the audience could better understand the strange events in the United States general election.Huanqiu Website Wechat Official Accounts made the political news more entertaining and edited news in populist ways to help foreign news close to the local audience.In the context of the new media,news domestication is still an important factor that affects how many people read the foreign news,and the best way of news domestication is to build the meaning sharing space between the foreign news and the local culture.Based on the above analysis,this paper discusses the problems in the news domestication of the mainstream media in China in terms of the news production concept,news narrative and cross-cultural communication,which are the rise of the news consumerism,the lack of variety in narrative perspective,the homogeneity of the narrative theme,the publication of the narrators' voice,the stereotypes of "the other" and the face negotiation respectively.Accordingly,the paper puts forward the countermeasures from the three aspects,providing mainstream media with constructive suggestions to improve the quality of foreign news reporting.
