A Study Of Participatory News Production

The new communication technology continues to reduce the threshold for citizens to have their own microphones.Social media is also an incentive to attract the public into the virtual world.With the involvement of public participation,news production has no longer been an insular link in the editorial building.In this paper,participatory news production is defined as a kind of production activity in which all the netizens leverage a vital role in selecting,producing,commenting,forwarding,giving likes to,and browsing news.According to the degree of participation of netizens,it can fall into three categories:weak participation,symbolic participation and full participation.Participatory news production is not a specific type of news,but a development trend of the news production model.It represents a new type of interpersonal relationship in news production against the background of the new media age.What it stresses is public participation and thus realizes the transition of communication models from "one-to-many" to "many-to-many".The relationship between producers and consumers reflects more involvement motivation,and the traditional "subject-to-object" relationship involves into a more equal "subject-to-subject" relationship.Among them,public participation directly promotes the emergence of participatory news production,and the degree of participation determines the type of participatory news production.The motivation mechanism of public participation lies in the sense of self-satisfaction and emotional resonance,as well as benefits obtained from more social cooperation and self-empowerment garnered through participation as media participants.Moreover,public participation also deconstructs the traditional news concept,redefines the discourse power behind the role,and renders the production process dynamic.However,it is also accompanied by issues such as disorderly and low-quality production.When it comes to the significance and value of its existence,on the one hand,participatory news production boasts the value of supplementing news resources,cultivating citizens' media literacy in practice,and promoting the development of participatory culture and democratic society.On the other hand,participatory news production is criticized for bringing about the participation gap,and instability in news production process and management.However it may be,participation is an inevitable trend in the future.Thus,there are still many tasks to be done for professional media personnel and regulatory agencies.
