Social public event has become a widely-discussed topic in the society during these years.Originated from the notion of emergent social event,social public events are those events which arouse wide-spread attention with significant social impacts.However,some problems,such as distortion of the truth or lack of in-depth investigations,have appeared in the report of such events in China.This essay,therefore,attempts to analyze how social public events are narrated in some experienced western media and find out an appropriate way for Chinese media in presenting such events in reference of excellent western works.The research sampled 156 stories from the Pulitzer Public Service winning works from 2008-2017,aiming to investigate how the reports awarded by the most renowned news prize worldwide present and reconstruct social public event in narrator,narrative perspective,narrative layers and narrative structure.The essay applies the theory of Narratology,using qualitative research approach.The result indicates that the researched reports mainly chose the identity of external narrator in narration,but also use internal narrator to present the details of the stories.In terms of the perspectives of narration,most samples adopt combined angles include external perspective,internal perspective,holistic perspective,and diverse perspective.In respect of narrative levels,pictures,videos,diagrams and data bases are adopted to help present the scene or background information of news stories.As for narrative structure,both parallel structure and chronological structure are adopted.Therefore,the research suggests reporters learn from above narrative methods widely adopted by the Pulitzer Prize winners to further enrich the content of reports.
