Research Of Cheng Changyuan And His Archival Thought

Cheng Changyuan is a famous archivist and library scientist in China.He devoted his entire life to academic research in archives and library science,he also devoted in construction of archives,library undertakings and academic research in related disciplines.His masterpiece named The County Government Archives Management is one of the "13 old books" in the archives of the Republic of China.His rich work experience has innovated the traditional archival work and formed an archival theory with individual characteristics in modern China,which is worth our research.At present,the academicians of archives research on Cheng Changyuan and his archival thoughts are relatively few and not comprehensive or profound.They lack a comprehensive view of Cheng Changyuan's academic process and his archival ideas.The reasons for the less academic thought of Cheng Changyuan are not only related to the times,but also related to Cheng Changyuan's relatively low status among the more highly acclaimed archivists during the period of the Republic of China.The scarcity of objective data and complex character backgrounds are also obstacles in researching the archival thoughts of Cheng Changyuan.On the basis of a large amount of new materials,this article uses literature research methods,historical research methods,induction summarization methods,and comparative research methods to comprehensively describe Cheng Changyuan's unparalleled growth experience,which includes his early career in Zhejiang Xianghu Normal School and Zhejiang Library,the mid-term work in the archival reform in Lanxi County,Zhejiang Province,and his later constantly working in the field of library science.This article summarizes Cheng Changyuan's major archival practice achievements and academic writings,firstly listing Cheng Changyuan's academic writings and introduces the ideological content of his representative work The County Government Archives Management and classic academic articles.This paper references the academic achievements of Cheng Changyuan,respectively discusses Cheng Changyuan's archival administrative thought,archivists thought,archival library(room)thought,archival classification thought,archival recorded thought,archival identification thought,archival protection thought and"integration" thought.Cheng Changyuan's archival thought has five major features:administrative orientation,influence of library science,practicality,multiple integration,and local innovation.His thought also has limitations,including limitation of times,lack of theory,influence of reason principle,unclear understanding of recorded,and weak awareness of discipline independence.Cheng Changyuan's academic spirit and quality can enlighten us to get involved in learning and be diligent in thinking and doing good deeds,to be simple,unselfish and hardworking.Cheng Changyuan's archival thought has made important explorations and contributions in constructing the basic framework of archives management,empirically clarifying the origin of archives disciplines,and actively promoting research on archives classification.Cheng Changyuan's archival thought also has important practical significance and contemporary value.As an archivist,he must establish archival service consciousness and pay equal attention to both management and use;he must raise the level of archival management,pay equal attention to both software and hardware;he must carry forward the spirit of archival practice,pay equal attention to both theory and practice.Cheng Changyuan's archival thought also has a positive impact on the open use of archive resources and the popularity of archives.This paper tries to integrate the academic achievements and historical documents related to Cheng Changyuan,restores the academic background and academic experience of Cheng Changyuan's academic research and work practices,in order to fill the gaps in systematic research of Cheng Changyuan's archival thought and enrich the historical accumulation of archival expertise.Simultaneously,this article tries to effectively cut in the study of the history of modern Chinese archival science and further strengthen the basic theoretical research of archival science.
