News Sources And News Framing

Recent years,China's air-pollution that has been called smog or haze is a typical environmental problem which raises the public and media's attention all over the world.Based on the reality,the question of this study is what are the differences that shows among the news frame in Western media and Chinese media?Furthermore,how are the differences through various presentation of the news sources?Based on the frame theory,this paper makes a textual analysis and comparative analysis of the reports of China Daily and New York Times.It is found that there is a consensus on the three topics of smog definition,health science and governance measures.However,they present different news frame.China Daily present guardian frame,fuzzy attribution frame and economic-development frame to highlight the reality that smog problem can be solved by technology.On the other hand,New York Times present the lack-of-happiness frame,strong-link frame and dilemma frame,in other to emphasis the risks and governance difficulties of smog problem.The study further found that the core new resource are always the government,professionals and the public.And the news media make good use of professionals that focus on the environmental science,environmental laws and the economics to establish a kind of technical authority in environmental communication.Through the fragmented,simplified and fuzzy using of professionals' discourse and scientific reports,the media hint,express and establish a relationship to build a news frame.For instance,they suggest that lung cancer and PM2.5 has a direct and unique relationship regardless of how it works.Besides,China Daily is good at connecting technical authority with political authority to shape that smog problem can be controlled,while ignoring vulnerable groups existing under the stress of smog problem.Nevertheless,New York Times connect technical authority with public,thus forming a questioning and resistance of political authority.It is precisely because of this,the scientific rationality of technical authorities in both media in China and America was digested.Through this kind of different reports on smog problem,media deepen the understanding difficulties among Chinese and western public.This study explores the various presentations of the news sources in news framing.Thus further explore the balance of news sources in coverage and understanding of operational mechanism of news frame.
