The official language of Malaysia is Malay, but because the Chinese population accounts for 20.8%of the total population in Malaysia,,a multi-ethnicity country, there are many students learning Chinese in this country, among which Chinese children are the main study group. With the rise of China as one of the fastest-growing economy powers in the world, more and more people recognize the importance of Chinese language especially in the working world. Many non-Chinese ethnic groups have started learning the language. One of the most difficult features to learn in Chinese language is the quantifier. In this paper, the writer focuses on the use of 'tiao'(strand)and ' gen'(thin strip)and the common errors that Chinese language learners usually make. This is due to the confusion caused by the meaning of the two quantifiers.Teachers teaching the language too are a factor causing such confusion as precision is usually absent in explaining the differences found in the usage of the two quantifiers. In the study conducted in SMJK Confucian Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia, respondents were sampled from both Chinese and non-Chinese ethnic groups.Questionnaires were used to collect relevant data and in-depth analyses were carried out.It is found that mistakes and confusion in the use of the two quantifiers were mainly caused by learning strategy, teachers factor and teaching materials. At the end of the papers, suggestions and recommendations were provided to improve future teaching in relation to the subject studied. There are seven chapters in this paper. The first chapter is the introduction, which consists of research objective, the research content, the purpose of the study and the methodology. The second chapter gives a brief account of the school chosen for the study, namely SMJK Confucian Kuala Lumpur and its teaching overview. The third chapter analyzes the quantifiers 'tiao' and 'gen' and their positions in a sentence juxtaposing the noun. The fourth chapter is about the questionnaires and the data collected. The fifth chapter comprises in-depth discussion based on the data collected. The sixth chapter contains suggestions for both teachers and students to rectify the mistakes, and finally the conclusion of the study makes up the seventh chapter.
