In 21st century, with the development of urbanization, more and more rural households start to purchase houses in the country towns. As buying occurs, the households' field of life and livelihood changes, their family livelihood capital also changes.Confronted with these changes, the households need to adjust their lifestyle and production. This paper takes Z village in Shanxi province as an example, trying to explore the living and livelihood of rural households who have bought houses in the country towns. The sustainable livelihood theory explains the formation and influence factors of livelihood strategy.Five kinds of livelihood capital is the core of The sustainable livelihood theory.According to the capital, different household has different livelihood strategies. In the family-stress theory research, sociologist always focus on the resource. Therefore,by combining the two theories, this paper set the "stress and livelihood"framework, trying to research the family how to response stress after buying a house in town. The study found that rural households who have bought houses in the country towns are someone capable. This mainly displays in two aspects:firstly, family livelihood capital is adequate;secondly, family livelihood strategy are diverse. After buying house, families turned into stress. In particular, natural capital has little changes;physical capital consists of the old house and the new flat. The finance capital, human capital and social capital are under pressure.Family is also under the pressure of livelihood transformation.Accordingly, stress sources formed, family members subjective cognition changes.Coping with pressure, family will form new living and livelihood strategy.According to the difference of living and livelihood,we can divide all the households into 3 kinds, that is "all family members live in village&part-time farming livelihood","family members live apart&main nonagricultural livelihood" and "all family members live in town&completely nonagricultural livelihood".Firstly,"all family members live in village" means family lack of human capital and social capital, thus it's hard for these families to transform livelihood. Then all family members live in village to reduce the cost of living.Secondly,"family members live apart" family are based on the intergenerational division of labor.Offspring choose to live and work in town while parents live in village and cultivate, thus get the most out of money.Thirdly,"all family members live in town" means off-farm employment and peasant's citizenship. From "live in village" to "live in town",with the change of residential place, rural households' means of livelihood also changes. In this process, the changes of capital structure seems small, but we can draw a conclusion.First of all, natural capital and physical capital have limited effects on improving the livelihood condition.Second, quantities of human capital, social capital and financial capital have improved.Thirdly, the interaction between 3 kinds of capital increased. The finally thing to notice,"flat in town" as new physical capital,it lets families in a stressful situation while it improves families' human capital and social capital which will help the family get out of the situation. It is these small changes gradually make the family livelihood methods become off-farm.
