Listening comprehension is the first step in interpretation;it can directly impact the quality of interpretation. This thesis discusses listening comprehension obstacles in consecutive interpretation from English to Chinese, aimed at finding their causes and providing useful coping strategies. This thesis is based on the interpretation of Ian Newton's speech about refugees' education. This thesis divides listening obstacles into two types: linguistic and non-linguistic problems.Linguistic problems include ignoring specific context, can't grab the structure of complex sentences, and unfamiliar with the speaker's expression habits.Non-linguistic problems include imbalanced effort distribution, ineffective anticipation, and inadequate background knowledge and preparation.According to the analysis, this thesis proposes some coping strategies.During daily practice before real practice, interpreters should build up a complete lexical vocabulary, improve note-taking,train logic, improve language competence, and accumulate background knowledge. In real practice, interpreters can use psychological compensation, vague processing, and asking the speaker to cope with listening comprehension obstacles. In this way,the author hopes to help other interpreters to improve their listening comprehension and interpretation.
