Obstacles And Strategies For Listening Comprehension Problems In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpretation

Listening comprehension is the first and important step when interpreting.This step can decide the output quality of interpreter to a large extent.This thesis is based on the consecutive interpretation of a mock meeting of a speech from Joseph Nye,an American professor,regarding on whether the US century has come to an end.After transcribing the source speech and the interpretation,the author did a lot of analysis and referred to related papers and finally classified the problems and found solutions.The obstacles to listening comprehension can be divided into two types: linguistic and non-linguistic problems.Linguistic problems include words and phrases comprehension obstacles and unclear logic.While the latter include lack of background knowledge and imbalanced effort distribution.According to the analyses,this thesis brings up some coping strategies and the strategies can be classified into two categories: top-down and bottom-up strategies.In which topdown solutions entail enlarging vocabulary,strengthening listening comprehension of flow of speech,improving ability to extract meaning of the speech and to divide sense group and etc.Bottom-up strategies include preparation before interpreting and accumulation of related background knowledge.In this way,the author hopes to help other learners to increase their listening comprehension.
