This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report on Monasteries and Culture Change in Inner Mongolia(Chapter 6,8).The original English book was written by a German scholar,Robert James Miller, with a description of some significant aspects of Lamaism and monasteries in Inner Mongolia in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, such as the number and distribution of population, lamas and monasteries, physical aspects of the monastery, internal organization of monastery, economy and politics of monasteries.Chapter 6 and 8 elaborate the hierarchy of lamas, the secular authority, imperial monasteries and politics of monasteries. This report aims to accumulate some translation methods to the difficulties in the book related to religion. There are difficulties in translation at both the lexical level and the syntactic level.Difficulties at lexical level involve various proper nouns(such as names of people, lama titles, places, temples, and other proper nouns related to Lamaism),which is the most difficult point in the whole translation task, and polysemous words.Corresponding methods are supposed to solve these difficulties, such as comparison of the parallel text, transliteration, annotation, and choosing the proper meaning of the word.At syntactic level, there are difficulties in passive sentences and long sentences.Conversion of sentences and linear translation are applied to handle these difficulties.
