| This is an English-Chinese translation report,which is based on the translation of Monasteries and Culture Change in Inner Mongolia by Robert James Miller.The source text of the translation project is the first three chapters of the book.The source text mainly tells us the history and organization of Lamaism,and influence of Lamaism on the economy and politics in Inner Mongolia.The first three chapters introduce the historical foundation of Lamaism in Mongolia society,the classification of monasteries,and the number and distribution of populations,lamas and monasteries in Inner Mongolia.During the process of the translation,the translator has met plenty of difficulties.The difficulties in translation mainly focus on lexical and syntactic levels.The lexical difficulties lie in the translation of proper nouns and polysemous words.There are many Chinese names for proper nouns cannot be found in existing literature.Some translations of polysemous words,like names of tribes and places,should be extended according to the background of the source text.The difficulty of syntactic is concentrated on long sentences with complex structures.In what order they should be translated is a difficult problem.In the translation practice,the translator used translation methods and techniques.At lexical levels,transliteration and annotation and semantic extension are adopted.At syntactic levels,following the original structure and reinventing sentence structures are used. |
