The Translation Of Proper Nouns In The Culture Of The Merchants In Mongolia Under The Skopos Theory

This is a report based on the translation practices.The original text of the project comes from the book “THE STUDY on the INTEGRATION of the FOLK CUSTOM of MONGOLIAN and HAN NATIONAITIES in the PROCESS of ZOU XI KOU”(From the Ming Dynasty to the early years of the Republic of China,residents from Shanxi,northern Shaanxi,Hebei and neighboring areas migrated to ethnic minority areas outside the Great Wall for business or livelihood.).On the whole,the sentence structures of the original text are long and complex,and contain a large number of special words related to the cultural background.The author is in charge of the translation of the eighth chapter of the book,with a total of 25939 Chinese characters.This chapter mainly describes the Merchants in Mongolia with Shanxi merchants as the main group and an important force in the process of Zou Xi Kou.Their business activities have changed the production and life style of the Mongolian-Han intersection area,and also made great contributions to promote the economic and cultural exchanges and national integration between the two nationalities.The biggest difficulty in translating this text is the translation of proper nouns.In order to deal with this difficulty,the author firstly makes a classification of the proper nouns in the text,and then summarizes the translation methods of each kind after consulting and studying relevant materials.As the essence and pith of culture,proper nouns play an important role in intercultural communication.In this thesis,the proper nouns of the original text are classified into people's name,place name,firm name,the name of official position and other proper nouns.On the basis of the translation theory that the author has learned,the Skopos theory is applied to the translation process to guide translation practice.In the translation process,with regard to the translation of people's names,place names,firms names and officialposition,as well as the translation of other proper nouns in Chinese,the author combines Skopos theory and puts forward several translation methods,such as transliteration,transliteration with annotation,free translation,free translation with annotation,literal translation,etc.Studying the translation of Chinese proper nouns can not only facilitate the spread of Chinese culture and promote its cultural status,but also enhance the reader's understanding of the original text and strengthen cultural exchanges with each other.The author believes that the Skopos theory plays a guiding role in understanding the original text accurately,expressing the translated text clearly and improving the translation of proper nouns in cultural texts.
