English Language(EL)is a compulsory subject of education in junior high school,and the importance of English Language learning is increasing.As an efficient tool for international communication,English has also become one of the essential skills in modern times.Most Chinese students begin to learn English from primary school,but even in junior high school,students still generally think that learning English is too complex,even the memorizing of English words,which is as the basic part of English vocabulary learning.A minimum standard of acquiring an English word is the acquisition of the sound,the form and the meaning of the word.According to the survey of the writer,students in grade two find that not only the meaning of words is difficult to memorize,but also the pronunciation and shape of words are frustrating to learn.Some students are good at using International Phonetic Alphabet to pronounce English words well,but others are not.This paper aims to return to the foundation of English vocabulary learning and to study the influence of phonics to English vocabulary learning ability of students who are in grade two of junior high school as research participants.After learning the phonics course of a whole semester,this experiment investigates whether students can correctly pronounce words by looking at the shapes of words,or write words correctly by listening to the sounds of words.The research aims to help students find the inherent rules of word pronunciation and spelling,develop accurate sense of sound,and detect the omission of letters or reverse alphabetical order while dictating,which further enhances students' interest in learning English and confidence in learning English,which lay a foundation for improving students' listening and reading ability even learning interest through the study of phonics.The research questions are as follow:(1)How does phonics influence junior students' interest in English vocabulary learning?(2)Which aspects of English vocabulary learning abilities does phonics influence junior students?This study adopts empirical research method.The first step is to investigate the learning situation of English words and the use of phonics among the second-grade students in a junior high school in Guiyang through a questionnaire.In the second step,the pronunciation and spelling abilities of 40 students in the experimental group and 40 students in the control group are tested.The third step is to teach the phonics course for a whole semester to 40 students in the experimental group.The controlled class is not involved in the course of phonics during the whole semester.The way of learning new words is built on existing knowledge.For example,the students in controlled class acquire the sound of words with the help of International Phonetic Alphabet they have learned or reading after the teacher.After the final experiment,the author collects and analyzes the data.The type of the post-test is the same as that of the pre-test.Although the difficulty of the words is increased in the post-test,the range of the basic words is not deviated from the textbook.In order to collect data from various aspects,this study also asks what students feel about the effects of phonics on students' ability of words learning and how phonics affects students' interest in words learning through an interview.The results show that: first,the use of phonics can help students in grade two of Junior high school solve foundation problems of English vocabulary learning,build up their confidence,improve their attitude towards English vocabulary learning and improve their interest in learning of English vocabulary.Secondly,the application of phonics can improve students' ability in two aspects: the ability word pronunciation and word spelling.Under the influence of phonics,the improvement of spelling ability of the students is greater than that of spelling.By learning the phonics course,students can improve their ability of word pronunciation and spelling also the sound and the shape of word and lay a foundation for future English vocabulary learning.
