A Study On The C-E Translation Of Star Hotel Websites In China From The Perspective Of Functional Theory

With the rapid improvement of economy and the enhancement of national strength in China,the interactions and communications with the foreign countries in politics,culture,and science and technology have been mounting with each passing day.More and more foreigners come to China for traveling,business or studies.In order to keep up with the trend and meet the requirement of customers,the Chinese hotel industry has launched bilingual hotel websites to attract foreign tourists.The hotel website is the epitome of the hotel's image and cultural connotation.It is also the necessary information to introduce the service,facilities and features of the hotel which is the main approach for the customers to learn about the hotel.However,we find that Chinese star hotel websites have poor English translation.The hotel websites is an important method to communicate with and attract customers,but the condition of Chinese to English translation is far from satisfied and it has a bad influence on the image of hotels.Based on the German functional translation theory,this thesis investigates the common problems in the C-E translation of Chinese star hotel websites,and summarizes the types and causes of these problems.This thesis will first reviews the literature on the background and development process of German functional translation theory,and introduces Chinese scholars' interpretation of the functional translation theory.Then,we propose English translation solutions based on the German functional translation theory,i.e.,divide the texts of hotel websites into four functional texts: informative function,expressive function,appellative function and phatic function.Finally,we adopt correct,reasonable and effective translation strategies according to different textual functions.
