| With the development of economy and the promotion of international status, China attracts more and more foreigners to come over for business, travel, study and communication. Hotel as their temporary lodging has already broken the simple function of accommodation, which even becomes the open window of a country and region, the platform and link for international communication. Hence the hotel profile translation of high quality can not only appeal more customers to expand the business but also can promote the national and cultural image.The translation of hotel profile didn’t catch the attention of scholars in China until recent years. Majority of them focus their study on the coastal open cities, and with their efforts, the quality of hotel profile translation has been improved a lot. With the rise of inland economy, much more foreigners begin to pay their attention to the second-tier cities for the tremendous developing scope and potential. Wuhan, as the representative of the second-tier cities, is unique for its special location, developed commerce and strong cultural atmosphere, but the situation of hotel profile translation is not optimistic there. The author conducts a survey on the translation of hotel profiles in Wuhan, which shows that among1100hotels, approximately100hotels have English bilingual hotel profile, and the ratio is less than10%. Even if there are English versions, a lot of translation errors can be seen, which is an urgent task for us to tackle.Hotel profile translation is a kind of pragmatic translation, which aims at transferring information and appealing customers. In view of its obvious purpose and function, the western functionalist theory provides it with effective guidance. The theory takes translation as a purposeful activity, which makes the ST keep in touch with TT according to translation purpose and make the communication become possible and smooth across cultural barriers. In the thesis, the author selects30bilingual samples of hotel profiles in Wuhan (the materials are true, valuable and typical) and has a thorough comparison between Chinese and English versions with regard to linguistics, style and culture. On the basis of Nord’s translation errors analysis pattern, the author points out the linguistic, cultural and pragmatic translation errors in C-E translation of hotel profiles. Under the guidance of functionalist theory and scientific methodology, the author advocates that translation is not a word for word translation, which should abide by the language and cultural convention of TT to realize the purpose of being understood and accepted by foreigners. Adopting the specific translation techniques such as conversion, interpretation, blend and omission, the author provides the revised translated versions. At the same time, the author emphasizes the importance of improving the quality of translators and establishing exterior normalization system with the expectation of improving the translation situation of hotel profile in Wuhan and bringing enlightenment for translators, therefore to promote our national and cultural image with joint efforts. |
