| To boost more extensive and deeper communication on semiotics between the Eas.t and the West,the Semiotics Workshop(short for the First IASS-AIS-NNU Advanced Semiotics Workshop)was held on Suiyuan campus,Nanjing Normal University from 3lst June to 2nd July,2018.The reporter,as a working staff during the Workshop,ofrered Chinese to English interpreting services for foreign guests and foreign students to help them to get a better comprehension of academic viewpoints of Chinese scholars and thus promoting mutual communication and progress.This report provides an analysis of difficulties as well as causes in the course of the interpreting practice,and offers solutions for further improvement.The reporter was confronted with two aspects of obstacles.The reporter found difficulties in the interpreting of related terms of semiotics,culture-loaded words and four-character idioms from the lexical perspective;and long and complex sentences,sentences with colloquial expressions and null-subject sentences from the syntactic perspective,The reporter proposed solutions to the above difficulties on the basis of the reporter's deep reflections on original materials from the project and previous research.From the lexical perspective,firstly it is necessary to have a brainstorming of the pre-task materials to handle the difficulty of related terms of semiotics;secondly the interpretation of cultural connotations for culture-loaded words should be provided;thirdly prompt explanations of four-character idioms should be given.From the syntactic perspective,firstly long and complex sentences should be simplified;secondly the interpretive method can be adopted to handle the difficulty of sentences with colloquial expressions;thirdly the method of flexible reorganization can be employed to deal with the difficulty of null-subject sentences.This report,which is based on interpreting practice,can serve as a reference to interpreting studies,especially whispered interpreting of academic meetings. |
