As an important part of world higher education,American higher education has always drawn extensive attention. The text translated is excerpted from the book entitled Inside the College Gates-How Class and Culture Matter in Higher Education.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, this report discusses the effectiveness of semantic compensation strategies in Chinese translation of texts introducing western culture and education. In order to avoid loss of translation or mistranslation caused by the lack of contextual information, the lack of cultural information, the lack of professional knowledge of the translator or readers, and the lack of aesthetic feeling of translated text, the report applies the following compensation strategies to solve the problems encountered in the translation--replacement compensation to add or reduce contextual information;gain compensation to supplement cultural background information, annotation compensation to fill the specialized knowledge gap, extended compensation to adjust the aesthetic feeling of the translated text.By comparison of the first version and revised version of some selected sentences, compensation strategies prove to be effective in Chinese translation of this type of text, and the quality of translation is improved as well,so that how class and culture matter in American higher education is better conveyed to Chinese readers. This practice report is expected to provide valuable reference for the selection of effective translation strategies in the Chinese translation of texts on higher education of western countries.
