This translation practice report selects a Canadian feminist novel Taxi!(pp.104-162)written by Helen Potrebenko as the translation practice text. The novel narrates the personal experience of Shannon, who makes a living by driving a taxi and passes through Vancouver’s streets every day under the background of Canadian society in the1970 s and 1980 s.The source text reveals the inferiority of women status, the disparity between the rich and the poor, and other social problems in capitalist society. This report summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation practice, including the translation of vocabulary, syntax and political ideology in western context.Through the analysis of specific cases, this report states the translation methods in view of above-mentioned translation difficulties. For example,at lexical level, due to the polysemy and the differences in parts of speech between English and Chinese, the translator adopts the methods of choice of words’ meaning and conversion of parts of speech. At syntactic level, there often are long and difficult sentences in the original text, and the translator employs the methods of literal translation, free translation, division, and amplification. At political ideology level, the translator uses the methods of domestication and foreignization to reflect the novel’s criticism of capitalism and the yearning for socialism. This translation practice report demonstrates that:(1)the translator needs to inquire necessary materials to fully understand relevant Canadian culture and history of the original text, and replenish background knowledge;(2)the translator needs to expertly employ the strategies of literary translation to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the target text;(3)the translator needs to learn to self-reflection,and treat translation tasks to work conscientiously and strive for perfection.
