This translation report is based on my translation of the first three seasons of a detective-themed British TV series Rosemary and Thyme in a fansub from April to September 2019.It consists of four chapters: Chapter one is a description of the translation task, including the background and characteristics of the task.Researches suggest that compositeness, instantaneity, popularity, time and space constraints are four significant features of subtitling.Chapter two is about the translation process,i.e.,pre-translation preparation, translation, and after-translation management. The guiding principles of this translation task is illustrated. In Chapter three, translation difficulties are divided into lexical and sentential levels. With specific examples extracted from the translation task, conversion into verbs, cultural substitution, generalization, explicating pronouns, inversion, splitting, adding and omission, from passive to active, and affirmative and negative conversion are discussed as the proposed specific translation methods.More problems at word and sentence levels, such as translating proximate and obviative, and adopting recasting to translate complicated sentences, are listed with examples in Chapter four.Based on the translation experience, this thesis argues that subtitle translation should be target audience-oriented,and whatever translation methods are used, the target text should be concise, correct, coherent, and comprehensible.
