A Report On The Chinese Translation Of China-U.S. Relations In East Asia

Since the 1990 s,China has gradually formed its own policy of regional cooperation in East Asia from good-neighborliness and friendliness to regional cooperation.After returning to the Asia-Pacific region,the United States had implemented a series of policies which directed at China and it's regional cooperation in East Asia.And the Asia-Pacific cooperation mechanism was used to suppress and transform the East Asian cooperation mechanism in order to strengthen its political and economic leadership in the Asia-Pacific region,which is a great challenge for China's policies on regional cooperation in East Asia.Therefore,China-U.S.relations had attracted considerable attention both at home and abroad.For example,many articles which are about China-U.S.relations had been published by Center for Strategic and International Studies(CSIS).The translator selected the article China-U.S.Relations in East Asia for translation.The source text belongs to political article which is persuasive with precise and logic wording.This report is based on the framework of “comprehension,expression,and adaptation” proposed by Professor Li Changshuan,which introduces the tools and translation methods used by the translator in “comprehension”,“expression” and“adaptation”.In terms of comprehension,the translator deepened the understanding of the original text by looking up parallel texts,analyzing linguistic features,sentence structure and rhetoric.As for expression,the translator tried to avoid inaccurate terminology translation and overforeignization by looking up fixed usage and idiomatic expressions.Beyond that,the translator adapted the translation to make it coherent and fluent according to the differences of narrative mode between Chineseand English.As for adaptation,the translator adopted some translation methods,such as amplification,omission,conversion and adjustment of syntactic structure,to adapt the translation according to translation purposes,the original author's intention and Chinese idiomatic expression so as to promote the translation quality.Compared to traditional translation practice reports,the theoretical framework used in this report can properly combine translation theories with translation practices.Under this framework,the translator selected some relevant theories based on the needs of translation cases to analyze translation cases,not a single translation theory.In addition,the material selected in this translation project will help Chinese political circles to further understand how China-U.S.relations will develop in a specific international environment,and what kind of diplomatic strategies the U.S.will work out in this context.Such being the case,Chinese political circles can get a more comprehensive and deeper understanding of the relationships between China and U.S.in East Asia so as to generate China's diplomatic principles and strategies objectively and rationally.
