A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Examining The South China Sea Disputes

The materials of this translation report are from the Center for Strategic and International Studies of the United States.The views expressed in these materials can reflect the attitude of the American political parties represented by the military institution towards China’s defense of its rights and interests of the South China Sea and its relations with ASEAN countries.The selected materials will help Chinese politicians better understand how Sino-US relations will develop in a specific international context,and what diplomatic strategies and means the United States will formulate.Hope this translation report will give a small help to China to have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding and grasp of Sino-US relations in Southeast Asia,and to formulate China’s diplomatic principles and diplomatic strategies more objectively and rationally.The report is based on political discourse.In the process of translation,the translator had encountered many problems in the expression of words,such as names of persons,geography,institutions,military weapons and terminologies.There were also exist problems of sentence structure analysis,transformation,westernization and inappropriate translation.Faced with these problems,the translator consulted the concept of "comprehension,expression and adaption" by Professor Li Changshuan and resolved them one by one.In the final of the translation report,the translator pointed out her shortcomings and future goals.There are five chapters in this translation report.The first chapter mainlydescribes the translation project,including the background,significance,requirements and the basic framework of the translation report.Chapter Two introduces the process of translation in detail,including the analysis of the characteristics of the source text before translation,the parallel texts,the translation tools in translation and the revision after translation.Chapter Three introduces and analyzes the theoretical framework of this thesis in detail and adopts Professor Li Changshuan’s translation framework of comprehension,expression and adaption.Chapter Four is the case study,which is the main part of this translation report.The translator analyzes the translation cases in the framework of understanding,expression and adaptation,combined with the difficulties in translation practice.In the conclusion,the translator points out her limitations and enlightenments from the aspects of professional ability,knowledge storage,critical thinking and research ability.
