Omission In Chinese-english Simultaneous Interpreting

This observational study of four professional interpreters' interpreting products probes into omission in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting from the perspectives of the Effort Model and the Relevance Theory.A case study of the C-E SI at the press conferences of the 4th Session and 5th Session of the 12 th CPPCC National Committee will be conducted.After transcribing the Chinese source speech and the English interpretation,the author compares them to mark the omission occurring in the SI output and adopts descriptive analysis to examine the types of and reasons for omission from the angle of the Effort Model and the Relevance Theory.The author tries to answer the following three questions:(1)What types of omission are there in the C-E SI output of professional interpreters in political settings?(2)What are the possible reasons for omission?(3)Can omission be a strategy in C-E SI in political settings?Through this study,the author finds that omission exists in the C-E SI production of professional interpreters in political settings,which can be classified into eight types.The objective reasons for professional interpreters to omit include two aspects:source-text complexity and language specificity.The subjective reasons for omission in SI are as follows:(1)to reduce cognitive loads;(2)to maximize communication.This study concludes that omission can be a strategy in C-E SI in political settings to reduce the interpreter's cognitive loads and facilitate effective communication.
