As an essential interpreting form in political conferences and conferences with onsite journalists’ questions, consecutive interpreting(CI)has been a significant field in interpreting studies nowadays. In conference CI,omission is frequently adopted as a strategy by the interpreter to tackle mental processing problems and avoid potential troubles under some circumstances. This thesis is a qualitative and descriptive research on omission in conference CI with the corpus of a diplomatic and political material----onsite press conference CI of the Two Sessions from 2017 to 2019.In this study, omission is regarded as either a strategy taken intentionally by the interpreter or an intentional or unintentional error, which is discussed from the perspective of two major phases of CI and a series of mental processing operations based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model. It is found that among various omission in political conference consecutive interpreting, omission of semantically redundant information and politically sensitive information are common, with the former more frequent. And the decision to omit certain information is mainly made by the interpreter during the first phase of processing what he or she heard – the comprehension phase. This study based on the onsite political press conference CI materials may serve as a tentative exploration for further interpreting studies and be instructive for interpreting trainings.
