The Strategy Of Omissions Based On Effort Model: A Consecutive Interpreting Practice Report On Interview With Jia Zhangke

China's film industry has become more internationalized with China's ever more frequent people to people exchange with the rest of the world.Against the backdrop of a more frequent academic exchange in the film industry,the Columbia University's Global Center in Beijing held an interview under the title of “A Conversation with Jia Zhangke: Chinese Independent Cinema,20 Years after Xiaowu”.The author of this thesis was the interpreter for this event.The interpreter was doing consecutive interpreting from Chinese to English for most of the time.The thesis took Danial Gile's Effort Model on consecutive interpreting to analyze the interpreter's performance,probing into the difficulties the interpreter met in listening and production effort as well as their coping strategies as in omission.In consecutive interpreting from Chinese to English,the interpreter was apt at meeting difficulties in listening when the source language was too intense,contained specific and technical terms and was mixed with the target language.A compromised listening effort would result in voluntary and involuntary omission in the production effort,which could also be hindered when the speaker used foul language.The thesis concludes after analyzing specific examples that interpreters should employ more pronouns in English to replace frequent words that appear in Chinese,a language tends to make repetition more than others.Interpreters should also conclude and deduct the logic in loosely-structured short Chinese sentences and turn them into succinct English expressions.When met with difficult words,dirty language for example,interpreters could explain the general idea or resort to de-verbalization.These omission strategies bear a certain degree of practical value to interpreting in general.
