A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of An Industry Research Report

With the development of globalization,economic and cultural exchanges between different countries and regions have been more and more frequent.And owing to geographical distance between countries and regions,the economic and cultural exchanges are conducted through a variety of ways.Traditional channels like international conferences and visits still endure,and innovational ways like exchanging printed or electronic materials that introduces the general situation of certain regions or industries,do exist.And industry reports analyzed in this report could serve this purpose.Industry reports,also known as industry research reports,are usually complete in structure,precise in language and with a large number of figures and tables.According to Skopos theory,the most important thing in a translation activity is the skopos of the translation task,including the purposes that source text writer,the target text reader and the target text reader intend to serve,and it is these views that guide the translator to finish the whole task discussed in the report.In the completion of the translation task,the translator encountered difficulties at the lexical,syntactic and textual level.Difficulties at the lexical level come from the large number of technical terms and proper nouns,while at the syntactic level,the major difficulties the translator encountered lies in the sentences in passive voice and long sentences.Besides,the translator had to deal with the cohesive devices and pay attention to the source text's completeness in structure and content.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator tried to resolve these difficulties by using a variety of translation strategies including transliteration,zero translation,voice changes,and breaking up long sentences,etc.All these strategies are utilized on the basis of the function and purpose of the source text and the translation task.What the translator also considered in translation is the reading habit of the target text reader,which could be regarded as part of the purpose of the task.Translation strategies including changing the cohesive devices and omission are used to serve this purpose as well.
