Interpreting has now become a very important means facilitating the communication of people from different parts of the world.Due to the huge demand for interpreting talents in this new era,the Chinese government boosted the training for interpreting-talents in colleges,as the result of which, interpreting contests such as the China Interpreting Contest have emerged and became quite popular.Based on personal experiences in the 6th and the 7th Shandong Provincial Contests and the 6th East China Regional Contest of the China Interpreting Contest, this report tries to explore the impact of the Effort Model by Gile(1995)on the processes of interpreting activity.According to this model, interpreters need to take their own processing capacity into consideration and distribute their total mental energy unevenly to the activities of listening and analysis,short-term memory, production and coordination.By analyzing the interpreter's performance in applying the model in the contests, this report recognizes the positive impact of the Effort Model for general interpreting activities including contest interpreting.By referring to the model, the interpreter could spot his own weaknesses in the whole process of interpreting and eventually managed to come up with relevant solutions. This report also points out that the Effort Model is limited in the way that it cannot serve as the sole solution to all interpreting-related problems due to its nature as an explanatory tool rather than specific skills.By implication, this report gives suggestions for novice interpreters to apply the Effort Model in their daily practices and interpreting contests.
