In the increasingly frequent international contacts, as a cross-cultural communicationbehavior, interpreting has been playing a more and more important role. Consecutive interpretingin particular, a kind of interpreting form, is widely used. Based on the author’s simulatedinterpreting of Oprah Winfrey Show “US President Barack Obama and First Lady MichelleObama”, this report will then make a detailed analysis of the interpreting process under theguidance of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model theory. This report is divided into five parts. Chapter one gives a brief introduction to this simulatedconsecutive interpreting project and the selection of the video material, thus pointing out thereasons for choosing this subject and its significance. From the two aspects of pre-interpretingpreparation and interpreting process, Chapter two specifically describes the implementing processof this project and serves as the situation reproduction to some degree. Chapter three focuses onthe Gile’s Effort Model, including its mode concept, stage division and main advantages, for thepurpose of setting a solid foundation for the following theoretical analysis. Chapter four is the coreof this report. According to Gile’s formula, in combination with the author’s personal practice, thispart dissects the process of consecutive interpreting from two stages (the listening, note-takingstage and the speech production stage), seven steps (listening and analysis, note-taking, short-termmemory operations, coordination, remembering, note-reading and speech production). Chapterfive serves as a summary of the entire project and the report.Through analyzing the interpreting process in detail, this report provides corresponding ideasand measures for remedying interpreting errors and omissions. The author hopes that it can offersome effective references for the development of the various interpreter training strategies so as tohelp them allocate efforts reasonably and improve their interpreting skills.
